WORK FELLOWSHIP GUIDELINES

LEX America has created a fellowship for individuals who want to join or remain in LEX Language Project, but do not have suffi cient funds.

We are offering a year-long work fellowship wherein the recipient puts up 70 LEX posters per month in lieu of paying the monthly membership fee of $50 (or for a credit of $50 from a family membership). A new member would also have the registration fee waived, and this would present a means for him or her to have a smaller financial commitment. In different neighborhoods we can put up between 20-40 posters in an hour, which would be the equivalent of approximately three to five hours a month (including travel time between neighborhoods). If the recipient cannot put up enough posters one month, s/he would need to make it up in the next month. In the event that s/he needed to freeze membership for a month, s/he would put up 28 posters for that month. Each month, the recipient will fill out a short form indicating how many posters s/he put up in different neighborhoods, which will help us figure out where advertising is most effective.

If a new member, s/he could pay for the 7 Language CD Set in 12 monthly installments (without interest) over the course of a year, which would be $43.75 a month, or the Hippo Goes Overseas Mini Set for $17.50 a month. The fellowship is for the duration of one year; however, it is possible to extend the fellowship if both the fellowship recipient and LEX America feel it is working well. Otherwise the recipient could choose to continue LEX and begin paying the regular monthly membership fees.

While our LEX Fellows put up posters on a regular basis, we would benefit from further publicity. We receive the majority of our inquiries from potential members through posters; they are the most effective way we have recruited new LEX members. It is also a wonderful opportunity for the fellowship recipient to speak other languages; in approaching different business owners, one has the opportunity to talk to people from all over the world. Often in a neighborhood, one has the opportunity to speak in five different languages.

Applicants who are new to the organization should visit LEX four times before filling out an application. We would want to see that the applicant has a genuine appreciation for LEX and would be a valuable member. We would also check references to ensure that this person is reliable and conscientious, and could maintain a year-long agreement. Our committee will make a decision based on the application and references.

Availability of the Work Fellowship is based on availability of funds and positions, and applicant location. Employees and family members of employees are not eligible for the Work Fellowship.

LEX America / LEX Language Project does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, ancestry, age or handicap.
